As of 6-2-2010 the Department of Pulbic Safety has an officer certified as a Child Safety Seat Technician. PSO Trupiano is available to residents of Grosse Pointe Farms who request a child safety seat inspection.
What is a Child Safety Seat Technician?
The one-on-one education of a safety check usually takes 30-40 minutes, depending on the car seat and the vehicle. The CSST should take all the time necessary to ensure that you feel competent and confident in re-securing the car seat into the vehicle and re-buckling your child into its car seat on your own.
During the check up, a competent CSST will:
- Fill out a checklist form (including car seat type, location in vehicle, misuse observations, if any, etc.).
- Review car seat selection appropriate for your child’s age, size, and review factors affecting proper use.
- Review the restraint manufacturer’s instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual with the caregiver and ensure that both are being followed correctly.
- Ensure that an appropriate seating position in the vehicle is being used, especially when using LATCH.
- Check the car seat for recalls, visible damage and an expiration date.
- If the seat is unsafe, you should replace the seat since it may not work as it should in a crash.
- Show what is correct or will be corrected before making the adjustment.
- Have you install the car seat(s) correctly using either the seat belt or LATCH system. Feel free to ask to learn how to install the seat with either options or in different seating positions.
- Discuss the next steps for each child, such as when to move to the next type of restraint:
- Rear- to forward-facing car seat
- Forward-facing harnessed seat to a booster seat
- Booster to an adult safety belt
- Discuss the benefits for everyone, including all adults, to riding properly restrained.
- Discuss safety in and around the vehicle (never leaving kids unattended, walking around the vehicle before moving, etc.)
- Discuss your state laws and best practice recommendations for occupant safety.
Inspections take from 30 to 40 minutes. When an inspection takes place please have available the child seat, manual for the child seat, and manual for the vehicle. If children are present during an inspection please make sure that child care is available for your children as PSO Trupiano will be instructing on proper seat installation.

Douglas Fergusson Roby Jr.
1932-2010
Grosse Pointe Farms resident Douglas Fergusson Roby Jr. peacefully passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Roby was born in Detroit Dec. 3, 1932, to Douglas and Ruth Clippert Roby. He was the loving husband of Mary McKean Roby and dear father of Patricia Roby (Edward C.) Gotfredson, Douglas F. (Lynne M. ) Roby III and Charles Clippert Roby. He was the proud grandfather of Jenna Esther Roby, Douglas Fergusson Roby IV, Edward Courtney Gotfredson Jr. and George Edmunds Gotfredson. He also is survived by his sisters, Hermine Klingler and Ruth Glancy, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Roby graduated from the Kiskiminetas Springs School in Saltsburg, Pa. and the University of Michigan in 1956. He was affiliated with the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. He took his flight training at the Marana Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., and finished his tour of duty at Hanscom AFB outside of Concord, Mass.
Upon returning to Detroit, he began his business career. He was first affiliated with American Metal Products, followed by FitzSimons Manufacturing and then Hydon Brand Electric. His association with these businesses was meaningful to him.
In 1977, he purchased Palmer Equipment Company. His glory years were at Palmer Equipment and all that he was able to accomplish through hard work and consistent dedication. He sold the company in 1999.
In 2002, Mr. Roby ran for election to the Grosse Pointe Farms City Council. He was successful in his efforts and continued in two 4-year terms of office. This public involvement gave him great pleasure. It was a special honor for him to hear the concerns of the people and be a voice for the community.
His family said Mr. Roby was good-natured, thoughtful, kind and always a gentleman with a light sense of humor. Being in the company of family and friends was special to him. His laugh was infectious and you always knew when he was present, for you recognized Doug Roby's laugh.

Newly planted trees should be watered lightly on a daily basis the first week or two after planting. With a garden hose, water the depressed area around the tree, allowing the water to puddle (without overflowing) and then let the water seep into the ground. Repeat this step once again. Sprinkler systems on a normal 10-20 minute interval may not be sufficient.
Rainfall should be taken into consideration before watering. The more it rains, the less you need to water.
Don't let the area around the tree become too saturated. Let the area dry before the next watering day. This drying will allow oxygen to get to the roots. If the area is too moist, then oxygen can't get to the roots and the tree will die.
After the first two weeks through the early fall, water every two to three days. Once again, rainfall should be taken into consideration before watering.
Keep in mind that during the summer months, especially if there is a hot or dry spell, the tree should be watered every other day. If there is a heavy rainfall, then allow the area to dry before resuming watering.
Enjoy your new tree!

In an effort to effectively control occurrences of serious back injuries the City of Grosse Pointe Farms will be enforcing Ordinance 69 limiting the size and weight of garbage containers used by residents. Ordinance 69, originally passed in 1943, limits the container size to 32 gallons and limits their weight to 50 pounds or less. This effort is being implemented due to an increase in the number of back stains/injuries that result in a paid loss in work time of Department of Public Works (DPW) employees.
In instituting this effort, the City intends to give residents notice by placing a green sticker on non-compliant containers which will notify the resident that their container was no longer allowed after December 31, 2004.
